About Vegas Veg
Vegas Veg is a nonprofit organization based in Las Vegas, Nevada comprised of vegans, vegetarians, and
veg-friendly people who have a passion for making a difference for animals, the planet, and people. Vegas Veg current mission statement is “Vegas Veg works to end human dependence on animals by promoting a compassionate, healthy
plant-based lifestyle through grassroots educational activities.”
Vegas Veg promotes a plant-based lifestyle (veganism) and provides social support to maintain a plant-based lifestyle. In order to promote a plant-based lifestyle Vegas Veg provides free information about vegetarian and vegan eating to the public at large, for example. through the Vegas Veg website (vegasveg.com), volunteers who hand out leaflets on public walkways, and newsracks situated throughout the Vegas Valley. Vegas Veg also provides free vegan food samples to the public at public events such as pet fairs or health demos.
Members educate and inspire each other to become vegan, stay vegan, and to become better vegans. This support is provided through vegan potlucks, restaurant "meetups," and an online messageboard.
For-profit organizations measure success by a bottom line. That "bottom line" is a number of dollars (or euros, etc) that the organization earns. Vegas Veg measures success by a bottom line as well. But the bottom line for Vegas Veg is the number of animals saved through supportive social events or informative outreach programs. Vegas Veg has formulated calculations to estimate the number of animals saved based on research done by the following nonprofits: Humane Research Council, Farm Sanctuary, and Farm Animal Rights Movement as well as other qualified resources. To date, Vegas Veg efforts have saved over 18,000 animals. See below for details...

Vegas Veg History and Accomplishments
The History of Vegas Veg:
- Vegas Veg began as a vegetarian potluck meetup in the Las Vegas area in November 2007. The membership was at about 150 people.
- In 2008, the group changed leadership and expanded to include more activities, including some animal activism and more restaurant meetups. The group formed a mission statement (above) and a small leadership team.
- In 2009, Vegas Veg adopted the name Vegas Veg and created an official website at VegasVeg.com, separate from Meetup.com.
- In 2010, Vegas Veg continued to grow while promoting "a compassionate, healthy plant-based lifestyle through grassroots educational activities." The group expanded by using Facebook.com as well as Meetup.com.
- In 2011, Vegas Veg incorporated as a nonprofit in Nevada. The Vegas Veg meetup.com membership reached 600 people.
- In 2012, the Vegas Veg meetup.com membership jumped to over 700 members. The facebook group was converted to a facebook page. Vegas Veg applied for national nonprofit status. The first annual membership survey was conducted and the first open-to-the-public vegan Thanksgiving event was held.
- Held over 550 “meetups," helping vegans make vegan friends as well as exposing nonveg people and newbie vegans to local vegetarian and vegan fare.
- Handed out over 25,000 vegan educational pamphlets!
- Put up 9 billboards in 2010 that were viewed over 10 million times! Put up 8 billboards in 2011, twice.
- Shown Earthlings and other veg-themed films or events that inspired nonvegans to go vegan and vegans to get active. And we’ve helped promote vegan-themed films when other groups show them, too.
- Compiled an online list of Vegas restaurants that are vegan-friendly.
- Promoted and participated in animal rights protests against puppymills, wild mustang round-ups, circus animal entertainment, and more.
- Promoted vegetarian and vegan campaigns by other organizations, for example COK's Subway sandwich campaign.
- Offered FREE vegan starter kits to UNLV students through the student newspaper classified ads.
- Raised over $400 for victims of the 2010 Haiti earthquake with a vegan bake sale.
- Raised $500 with a vegan bake sale for Japan after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
- Raised over $400 for Mercy For Animals with a fundraising dinner in 2011.
- Raised over $500 for Farm Sanctuary with two events: a fundraising walk/run and a vegan Thanksgiving potluck, both in 2012.
Measuring Success
For-profit organizations measure success by a bottom line. That "bottom line" is a number of dollars (or euros, etc) that the organization makes. Vegas Veg measures success by a bottom line as well. But our bottom line is the number of animals we save through our supportive social events or our informative outreach programs.
The bottom line: as of November 23, 2012 Vegas Veg has spared over 19,334 animals lifetimes of suffering through educational outreach and supportive social events... each year. And that number is growing!
See how we came to that figure:
